The Algorithm of Disrespect
Australian Government Respect.gov.au Stop it at the Start
The Algorithm of Disrespect was the interactive centrepiece of the Australian Government's fifth Stop it at the Start campaign, designed to help parents better understand the hidden online influences shaping young people's attitudes towards respect.
Developed as part of a nationwide integrated campaign spanning television, cinema, social, digital and online experiences, the interactive platform recreated a teenager's social media feed to reveal how algorithms can progressively amplify disrespectful content and behaviours.
-
As the project's UX/UI Designer, I led the interface design for the interactive experience, working closely with developers, web designers and the wider creative team to bring the campaign into a cohesive digital product.
Over a multi-month delivery, my role centred on translating the creative vision into an intuitive interface while maintaining visual consistency across the experience as it evolved through multiple rounds of design, development and stakeholder feedback.
-
The experience sat within a large integrated campaign with many moving parts, requiring close collaboration across creative, production, development and Australian Government stakeholders.
The challenge was to create an interface that felt instantly familiar to anyone who has used social media, while supporting a clear educational journey for parents. Every interaction needed to feel authentic without losing sight of the campaign's purpose.
Designing the experience meant balancing realism with clarity, collaborating across multiple disciplines and maintaining consistency throughout a long delivery process involving agency teams, production partners and Australian Government stakeholders.
-
The interface was designed to mirror the visual language and behaviours of contemporary social platforms, creating an experience that felt believable and engaging from the first interaction.
Working closely with developers throughout the build, I refined layouts, interactions and interface behaviours to ensure the final product remained true to the creative vision while delivering a seamless user experience across devices.
